Saving Energy Easy To Follow
They say if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. But when
it comes to saving money on energy bills, the kitchen is a really good
place to start.
While the majority of a home’s summer energy usage can be attributed
to cooling, the kitchen, which often holds most of the home’s
appliances, is an area where savings can be realized all year round. By
following some easy tips, you can cook up some real savings in the
kitchen. Here are some easy tips to save energy:
- Check the temperature of your refrigerator
and freezer. The refrigerator should be between 38 and 42
degrees; the freezer 0 to 5 degrees. Ten degrees colder than
necessary can increase energy consumption up to 25 percent.
- Defrost your refrigerator/freezer whenever
one-quarter inch of frost develops and clean the condenser coils
every two months.
- Don’t keep a second refrigerator going all
the time just to use it once in a while. If you do have a second
refrigerator or freezer, don’t use it in a garage or other space
that is not air conditioned or insulated.
- Cover liquids before placing them in the
refrigerator. The liquids give off vapors that add to the
compressor’s workload.
- Defrost foods in the refrigerator rather
than in the microwave.
- Use your the oven wisely. Use a toaster
oven to heat or bake small quantities of food, and use a
microwave oven to reheat leftovers, cook vegetables and
casseroles. Cook with the outdoor barbecue during the summer
months to keep the heat out of the kitchen.
- Run full dishwasher loads and use the "air
dry" setting or turn the dishwasher off after the final rinse.
- Use only cold water in your food waste
disposal and to rinse dishes before putting them in the
dishwasher.
